Commercial Rooftop Solar Installation
Dec 2
Did you know that the Sun can generate enough energy in just one minute to power the entire world? In fact, within 24 hours, the Sun produces more energy than the global population could consume in many years. This highlights why solar energy is one of the most reliable, cost-effective, and efficient energy solutions available today.
In recent years, the solar industry has grown by nearly 50%, fueled by government incentives like the Solar Investment Tax Credit and a growing demand for clean energy across commercial and industrial sectors. But what’s key to harnessing this energy? Solar panels—the vital component that captures sunlight and converts it into electricity.
By installing solar panels for your business, you can reduce your carbon footprint while also saving on electricity bills. But with so many solar panel types on the market, how do you choose the right one for your specific needs? In this blog, we’ll explore the different types of solar panels, their strengths and weaknesses, and how to choose the best solar panel types for your energy system.
Solar panels are composed of many small solar cells, with the most common types of solar panels in India being 72-cell and 60-cell panels. These panels typically measure around 2 meters by 1 meter or 1.6 meters by 1 meter. Each solar cell consists of layers of materials like silicon (a conductor), phosphorus (with a negative charge), and boron (with a positive charge).
When sunlight, made up of tiny energy particles called photons, hits the surface of the panel, it knocks electrons loose from the silicon. This movement of electrons creates an electric current, which flows through small silver lines on the solar cells. This process, known as the Photovoltaic Effect, is how solar panels generate electricity.
Monocrystalline solar panels are made from pure silicon and are easily recognizable by their uniform dark color and rounded edges. As the most efficient type of solar panel, the latest models can achieve over 20% efficiency. This high efficiency is due to the purity of the silicon used, which allows for better energy conversion.
Advantages:
Polycrystalline solar panels are gaining popularity due to their balance of efficiency and affordability. Unlike monocrystalline panels, polycrystalline cells are made by melting together fragments of silicon rather than using a single crystal. This method lowers production costs, making polycrystalline panels more budget-friendly.
These panels are typically blue in color and have a square shape with no gaps between the cells. While their efficiency is lower than monocrystalline panels, they are still a viable option for those with larger roofs and a focus on cost savings.
Advantages:
Thin-film solar panels represent the latest in solar panel technology, offering the most versatility due to their lightweight and flexible nature. They are made from various materials, including Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS), Cadmium Telluride (CdTe), and Amorphous Silicon (a-Si).
Thin-film panels are around 350 times thinner than traditional silicon panels, making them more portable and flexible. Despite this, the overall size of the panels can be large, similar to crystalline panels, depending on their application.
Advantages:
PERC solar panels are an advanced version of traditional monocrystalline panels, incorporating a passivation layer on the rear of the cell to significantly boost efficiency. This layer enhances energy absorption by reflecting light back into the cell, improves electron flow by reducing the likelihood of electron recombination, and reduces heat buildup by reflecting certain light wavelengths away from the panel’s metal back sheet. Together, these improvements lead to greater energy production and overall efficiency in PERC solar panels.
Advantages:
Solar Panel Type | Efficiency Range | Best Use |
Monocrystalline Solar Panels | 17% – 22% | Ideal for limited roof space where maximizing energy output is critical. |
Polycrystalline Solar Panels | 15% – 17% | Best for larger installations with ample roof space and a focus on budget. |
Thin-Film Solar Panels | 10% – 12% | Suitable for portable solar setups, RVs, boats, or buildings with unconventional roof shapes. |
PERC Solar Panels | 18% – 23% | Perfect for limited spaces requiring higher efficiency and more energy in a smaller footprint. |
Monocrystalline Solar Panels Power Capacity: Monocrystalline solar panels are known for their high power output, typically ranging from 300W to 400W per panel. Some high-end models can even reach capacities above 500W, making them highly efficient for commercial and industrial installations.
Polycrystalline Solar Panels Power Capacity: Polycrystalline panels generally offer power capacities between 250W and 350W.
Thin-Film Solar Panels Power Capacity: Thin-film solar panels typically have lower power capacities, ranging from 100W to 300W per panel.
PERC Solar Panels Power Capacity: PERC solar panels offer power capacities similar to or slightly higher than monocrystalline panels, ranging from 350W to 450W. Some high-efficiency models can reach up to 500W, providing more power in the same physical space compared to traditional solar panels.
Type of Solar Panel | Price Range | Key Features |
Monocrystalline Solar Panels | INR 8,000 – INR 52,000 | – Highest efficiency – Performs well in low-light conditions – Longer lifespan |
Polycrystalline Solar Panels | INR 6,000 – INR 10,000 for commercial use INR 400+ for single sheet | – Lower efficiency – Cost-effective – Suitable for larger spaces |
PERC Solar Panels | INR 30 – INR 70 per watt INR 38,000 – INR 50,000 for 1 kW system | – Higher efficiency – Improved light absorption – Suitable for limited space |

At GSE Renewable Energy, we offer affordable and high-quality solar panel types solutions for industrial and commercial customers. Our team of experts provides guidance on solar panel installation to ensure the right panel choice for your specific energy needs. We use durable, top-notch solar panels that deliver great energy efficiency and savings with competitive pricing.
The best type of solar panel depends on your needs. Monocrystalline panels offer the highest efficiency and durability, making them ideal for limited spaces, while polycrystalline panels are more cost-effective for larger installations. Thin-film panels are best for flexible and unconventional installations.
Monocrystalline and PERC panels typically last 25 to 40 years, polycrystalline panels around 20 to 35 years, and thin-film panels usually last 10 to 20 years.
Bifacial solar panels generate electricity from both sides, capturing sunlight from the front and reflected light from the back, increasing overall efficiency.
The three different types of solar panels are monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film panels.
Monocrystalline panels are usually black with rounded edges, polycrystalline panels are blue with square cells, and thin-film panels are slim and flexible with a smooth surface.
